We are actively seeking a treasurer to join our enthusiastic team and we need more volunteers so please get in touch at friendsofslingsbyschool@hotmail.co.uk or speak to one of us outside school for more information if you have any time at all to spare. We can’t fundraise for school without your help! Our AGM minutes will be published shortly so please take the time to read them.

Personalised Christmas Cards & Gifts – All children have now taken their Christmas card artwork home in book bags. To guarantee delivery in time for Christmas the deadline to return the artwork and completed form to school is this Friday the 14th October. Please read the instructions that came with the artwork for more information.

We welcome all children from school to join us for a snack box, fun, music and games with our very special host, DJ Frankensmith! If you would like your child/ren to attend, please:

➢ Any dietary requirements

➢ If you are able to attend and help as a parent volunteer – we still need volunteers to help set-up

2. Please pay for your tickets in advance through Parent Pay by this Friday 14th October. We understand that circumstances are difficult and for any families finding it tricky to pay for a ticket please email the school office and FOSS will be happy to help with the cost. We will be running a fancy-dress competition, with a prize each for KS1 and KS2, plus a pumpkin carving competition. Entries for the pumpkin competition are £1 and can also be paid through Parent Pay. Pumpkin entries can be left outside the Village Hall on the day of the party.

The Halloween party is a FOSS event. On the day of the party, children can bring their costume in a named bag to school along with some change if they would like to buy any treats, school staff will help the children attending get changed into their costumes at school and accompany them to the Village Hall at 3.30pm, but once at the party adult supervision will be provided by FOSS and parent volunteers. WE STILL NEED VOLUNTEERS to help us set-up on the day – please email us at friendsofslingsbyschool@hotmail.co.uk when you send us your child’s details to confirm if you are able to help. Thank you!

3. We need donated baked goods to sell at our tuck shop please! If you are able to donate baked goods such as cupcakes, traybakes and treats for the children, they can be brought to school on the morning of the party, thank you.

Message from the Head Teacher, Mr Smith – Thank you to FOSS for providing us all with a spectacular Duck Race day on Saturday! The FOSS team work tirelessly for our school, as well as juggling their own demanding jobs and families, and the Duck Race this year was even better than ever! Please read the FOSS update below for full details of the sums raised. All the children in school benefit hugely from the FOSS fundraising. Mrs Ponting, the FOSS treasurer, steps down this year and she will be greatly missed. If you are good with numbers, please consider joining the FOSS team! Thank you FOSS, you are amazing!

Duck Race and Family Fun Day – A huge thank you to everyone who supported our biggest fundraising event of the year. Volunteers, donations of baked items and all those who visited us on the day, we really couldn’t do it without your support. We are delighted to share that we raised an amazing £4,101.49! – our biggest ever total for this event and a wonderful way to end the school year, thank you all!

End of year donation to school – Thank you to all our school families this year. We have had a record-breaking fundraising year and your support really does make such a difference to the total donation we can make to school. We are really delighted to announce that we have donated a whopping £7,650.00 to Slingsby School this year. Please see the attached flyer of details of what the FOSS money has been used for in school which will also be confirmed at our AGM. FOSS New Members

Request for help with our accounts – The FOSS accounts are verified each year and we are looking for help over the summer. If there are any school families and friends that are qualified to verify our accounts please get in touch and email friendsofslingsbyschool@hotmail.co.uk for more information.

FOSS needs you! – We are looking for more parents and carers to join our team, as many have left with their children leaving, and if we don’t have new recruits unfortunately we will be unable to run our events next year. If you feel you could give us even a few hours of your time over the year, we would be so grateful. More hands make light work and it is a really happy team to be a part of making a real difference to our children’s education. FOSS New Members

Message from FOSS Chairman July 2020

A massive thank you to everyone who has supported the virtual fundraisers FOSS have held in recent weeks. The Family Challenge and Decorate a Duck competition raised £1,336 and Bag2School £114. Well done to everyone who entered the Family Challenge, what brilliant ideas you all had! Poppy Cooke raised the most money, a whopping £492, by completing a 20 mile walk in only 10 days! Well done Poppy! Poppy will receive a Peagreen Pottery voucher. We also had an amazing selection of decorated ducks entered, thank you for all your fantastic efforts. FOSS ensured an anonymous judging process and Mrs Metcalfe found it very difficult to pick one as they were all so good but the winning duck was number 18 “Hope”…. the winner is therefore Freddie Massey winning a book voucher! Congratulations to you both!! Everyone’s entries will be available for you to enjoy on the Foss Facebook Page from Thursday 16th July.

It has been a difficult few months for everyone but the fabulous ideas for virtual fundraising and the team spirit of the FOSS committee members have been amazing. We have already donated £1,500 to school but will add a further £1,000 for the start of the term. No-one knows what the new term will bring but FOSS are likely to need to continue to run virtual fundraisers for the foreseeable future – families can continue to help over the summer by shopping online via Easy Fundraising.

Finally, I will be standing down from the committee after eight years and I would like to thank everyone who has supported me. We currently have a fantastic, hard working committee who despite having other pulls on their time always come up with great ideas. In particular a huge thank you to Sonja Sedran and Mel Staley who have been Treasurer and Secretary over the last two years, I couldn’t have done it without them!!

Liz Wilson, Chairman.

Message to FOSS from staff at Slingsby School

School would like to say a huge thank you to FOSS for all their continued efforts this year and to parents for supporting them. It really is incredible that FOSS has been in a position to give school a donation whilst we have been in lock-down. All the staff in school are also so very impressed with Poppy Cooke walking 20 miles in 10 days raising £492! Thank you Poppy! A massive thank you to Liz Wilson who has worked tirelessly for FOSS and organised events and enthusiastically kept FOSS going. Liz has helped raised thousands of pounds for school over the years and with only one ambition – to benefit all the children at Slingsby School. Thank you Liz, we are sincerely grateful.
