2021 Scarecrow Competition and May Day Celebrations It was over a year ago that we began our plans for the 2020 Annual Scarecrow Trail, which runs in conjunction with the Slingsby Village May Day Maypole Celebrations-which as we know, was unable to take place. One year on and we are in a much better place; however, we don’t yet know what will be possible come the May Day Bank holiday long weekend of Saturday 1st May through to Monday 3rd May. We have historically received amazing entries for the FOSS Scarecrow Competition, demonstrating how well supported this event has been which is why we don’t want to let this event simply pass us by. Therefore, we are asking for Scarecrow Competition entries at this time, with plans for the competition to take place virtually or at best, placed on display in the village to be held as a School and Village only event. Further details and examples of entries from previous years are in the attached flyer. Please keep an eye on our Facebook page and the School newsletter for further updates closer to the date.
Easter Bunny Mask Competition Don’t forget to bring your decorated Bunny masks into school tomorrow for a chance to win a prize in each class bubble. We hope you’ve all had a wonderful time decorating them. Also, as a small thank you to the children for all their hard work and effort during the recent period of home-schooling, each will bring home with them tomorrow an Easter arts & craft pack with some fun activities to do during the Easter break.
Bags 2 School Collection Another quick reminder and a wonderful opportunity to clear out your cupboards during the Easter break, is our Bags 2 School collection scheduled for Thursday 29 April. The collection will be from the Slingsby Sports Field, where one of the team will be available from 8.45 – 9am. Please refer to the following website for the full details of what you can donate and due to the pandemic: you will need to provide your own bags. www.bags2school.com
Uniform Collection We would very much like to hold a pre-loved uniform sale or have a running stock list so if you have any uniforms you no longer need, we would be incredibly grateful if you would donate these to FOSS. If you’re able to, please drop them off in a separate bag to the Slingsby Sports Field on the day of the Bags 2 School collection on Thursday 29 April.
Easter Raffle And finally, thank you to those who purchased tickets for our Easter Raffle. We have raised a wonderful £225, which for an event we have never run before-and held virtually- is a great outcome. Following is the list of winners of each prize (which will also be added to our Facebook page) with the prizes being distributed this afternoon or tomorrow on the Green. A huge thank you must also be extended to the businesses listed below who have supported the raffle by donating their prizes. Easyfundraising and AmazonSmile A last-minute reminder that when you are doing your Christmas shopping you really can make such a difference to the amount of money donated to school when you shop online via www.easyfundraising.org.uk. We are also now registered with AmazonSmile, simply go to smile.amazon.co.uk, log in to your account and select FOSS as your charity then shop as you normally would with Amazon. See the attached leaflet for more details about how you can raise money for school when shopping online.
We would like to say a big thank you and farewell to Mel who is leaving to move back to Australia, thank you for your contribution to FOSS and we wish you all the best for the future.
Finally thank you to all families of Slingsby School and the staff for your continued support over what has been an uncertain and difficult year, we wish you all a very merry Christmas.
Annual General Meeting
Thank you to all who joined us at the FOSS AGM on Wednesday 21st October including Mr Smith and Mrs Massey on behalf of school. The election of new office bearers took place with Kathryn Fairweather taking on the Secretary role, Lucy Ponting the Treasurer role and Sonja Sedran the Chairwoman role. A huge thank you must be extended to Liz Wilson, Mel Staley and Sam Burnett, who step down this year for a well earned rest. Thank you also to our existing and new Committee members. Please find attached a copy of the minutes and supporting documents.
We hope each and every one of your children who attended the party enjoyed it. From the feedback we’ve received, we feel the event was a success in every way, with a net total of £371.05 raised. Thank you again to our wonderful school staff for making the party happen. Bags 2 School – Thank you to those who managed to rustle a bag or two together for the collection on Monday. And unusually, even the sun was shining. Whilst we don’t have the final figure yet, a collection weight of 230kg was confirmed making an approximate figure of £70.
Message from FOSS Chairman July 2020
A massive thank you to everyone who has supported the virtual fundraisers FOSS have held in recent weeks. The Family Challenge and Decorate a Duck competition raised £1,336 and Bag2School £114. Well done to everyone who entered the Family Challenge, what brilliant ideas you all had! Poppy Cooke raised the most money, a whopping £492, by completing a 20 mile walk in only 10 days! Well done Poppy! Poppy will receive a Peagreen Pottery voucher. We also had an amazing selection of decorated ducks entered, thank you for all your fantastic efforts. FOSS ensured an anonymous judging process and Mrs Metcalfe found it very difficult to pick one as they were all so good but the winning duck was number 18 “Hope”…. the winner is therefore Freddie Massey winning a book voucher! Congratulations to you both!! Everyone’s entries will be available for you to enjoy on the Foss Facebook Page from Thursday 16th July.
It has been a difficult few months for everyone but the fabulous ideas for virtual fundraising and the team spirit of the FOSS committee members have been amazing. We have already donated £1,500 to school but will add a further £1,000 for the start of the term. No-one knows what the new term will bring but FOSS are likely to need to continue to run virtual fundraisers for the foreseeable future – families can continue to help over the summer by shopping online via Easy Fundraising.
Finally, I will be standing down from the committee after eight years and I would like to thank everyone who has supported me. We currently have a fantastic, hard working committee who despite having other pulls on their time always come up with great ideas. In particular a huge thank you to Sonja Sedran and Mel Staley who have been Treasurer and Secretary over the last two years, I couldn’t have done it without them!!
Liz Wilson, Chairman.
Message to FOSS from staff at Slingsby School
School would like to say a huge thank you to FOSS for all their continued efforts this year and to parents for supporting them. It really is incredible that FOSS has been in a position to give school a donation whilst we have been in lock-down. All the staff in school are also so very impressed with Poppy Cooke walking 20 miles in 10 days raising £492! Thank you Poppy! A massive thank you to Liz Wilson who has worked tirelessly for FOSS and organised events and enthusiastically kept FOSS going. Liz has helped raised thousands of pounds for school over the years and with only one ambition – to benefit all the children at Slingsby School. Thank you Liz, we are sincerely grateful.
