Scarecrow Letter 2022

Scarecrow Competition – WE NEED YOUR HELP! We need your help to run this year’s scarecrow trail on Saturday 30th April through to Monday 2nd May. Without your support this event will not go ahead, please, please support one of our biggest fundraisers by:

  • Entering a scarecrow, the DEADLINE FOR ENTRIES IS FRIDAY. There is no theme, just create something fun for children to look for as they follow the trail around the village, simply complete the entry form attached or received at school and hand-in to school by this Friday the 1st April.
  • VOLUNTEER to run our pop-up cafe on Saturday the 30th or Sunday the 1st May. Pease volunteer for a two-hour slot, we need two volunteers for each slot – you could buddy up with a friend. The rota is in the entrance hall and will be available at school parents evening.
  • VOLUNTEER to run our tombola stall on the green on Monday the 2nd May, please volunteer for a two hour slot. The rota is in the entrance hall and will be available at school parents evening.
  • DONATE pre-loved quality children’s clothing, toys, games and books for our pre-loved stall, these can be left with the Bag2School collection on Monday 4th April or brought to school on Friday 29th April.

If you have never visited the scarecrow trail, or made a scarecrow, make this your first year! It is a great event, enjoyed by all the family and provides fantastic support to the school and village. There is a prize for the best scarecrow and a prize draw for completed trails, please see the attached leaflet for more information.

Mother’s Day stall and Spring-time lamb competition – Thank you to all those who supported our stall on Friday, we raised £145 at our plant stall. Winners of Spring competitions will be announced next week.

Bag2School – Collection is this coming Monday the 4th April, an ideal opportunity to have a Spring sort out and a great way to raise funds for school. Bags can be left outside school on the grass in front of the fence by the Reading Rooms (Class 4) before 9am on Monday 4th April. Details of accepted items can be found at bag2school.com/what-we-collect<http://bag2school.com/what-we-collect. Message from FOSS Chairman July 2020

A massive thank you to everyone who has supported the virtual fundraisers FOSS have held in recent weeks. The Family Challenge and Decorate a Duck competition raised £1,336 and Bag2School £114. Well done to everyone who entered the Family Challenge, what brilliant ideas you all had! Poppy Cooke raised the most money, a whopping £492, by completing a 20 mile walk in only 10 days! Well done Poppy! Poppy will receive a Peagreen Pottery voucher. We also had an amazing selection of decorated ducks entered, thank you for all your fantastic efforts. FOSS ensured an anonymous judging process and Mrs Metcalfe found it very difficult to pick one as they were all so good but the winning duck was number 18 “Hope”…. the winner is therefore Freddie Massey winning a book voucher! Congratulations to you both!! Everyone’s entries will be available for you to enjoy on the Foss Facebook Page from Thursday 16th July.

It has been a difficult few months for everyone but the fabulous ideas for virtual fundraising and the team spirit of the FOSS committee members have been amazing. We have already donated £1,500 to school but will add a further £1,000 for the start of the term. No-one knows what the new term will bring but FOSS are likely to need to continue to run virtual fundraisers for the foreseeable future – families can continue to help over the summer by shopping online via Easy Fundraising.

Finally, I will be standing down from the committee after eight years and I would like to thank everyone who has supported me. We currently have a fantastic, hard working committee who despite having other pulls on their time always come up with great ideas. In particular a huge thank you to Sonja Sedran and Mel Staley who have been Treasurer and Secretary over the last two years, I couldn’t have done it without them!!

Liz Wilson, Chairman.

Message to FOSS from staff at Slingsby School

School would like to say a huge thank you to FOSS for all their continued efforts this year and to parents for supporting them. It really is incredible that FOSS has been in a position to give school a donation whilst we have been in lock-down. All the staff in school are also so very impressed with Poppy Cooke walking 20 miles in 10 days raising £492! Thank you Poppy! A massive thank you to Liz Wilson who has worked tirelessly for FOSS and organised events and enthusiastically kept FOSS going. Liz has helped raised thousands of pounds for school over the years and with only one ambition – to benefit all the children at Slingsby School. Thank you Liz, we are sincerely grateful.
